Old habits die hard and none are harder to break than addictions. It’s Stoptober and resisting smoking for five weeks means you have a much greater chance of giving up for good!

October is Stoptober and it’s a great time to commit to quit smoking with all the health benefits that brings. If you can give up for 28 days, you are 5 times more likely to give up for good.

There are a huge number of resources on the NHS website which can help you begin including information about aids to give up smoking (nicotine replacement etc.) and links to local stop smoking services.

You can download the NHS’s ‘Quit Smoking’ app which will help you track your progress.

Before stopping spend some time thinking about things that might help you succeed:

Write a list of reasons to quit (health, financial, family etc.) .

Tell other people you are going to quit so they can support you.

Investigate the stop smoking aids that might help you.

Think about what your triggers for smoking are and how you will avoid these.

Think about what you will do if you are tempted to smoke.
