Clarifying the complexities of government guidelines forms today’s Friday Fact. We’ve unravelled the requirements of the DVLA for Marfan patients, and removed any ambiguity. Hope you find this helpful!

Visit the DVLA website where you can:

-       Check guidelines

-       Print out the forms to complete

If you have Marfan syndrome it needs to be reported to the DVLA as per the guidelines given in this link.

The form you need to complete will depend upon the type of licence that you hold, Car or Motorcycle or Bus, Coach or Lorry licence. Both forms are available at the link above.

The guidelines may be different if you have Marfan syndrome AND an aortic aneurysm as this may also need to be reported.

Aortic Aneurysm can be reported online using this link

Again, there are different rules depending on the type of licence that you hold. The guidelines also depend on the size of the aneurysm.

Your GP or heart specialist will probably be familiar with the DVLA guidelines as they are often asked for additional information about patients who notify DVLA of their condition. Speak to them if you have any concerns.

Often a report of your condition is a formality, however, it’s important. You can be fined up to £1000 if you don’t report a condition. You can also be prosecuted if you’re involved in an accident as a result.
